One Year of LegalZoom Is Nearly Seventeen Texas Agent Changes

The Brand Is Worth Something and We Will Say So

There is a reason LegalZoom is the name people reach for. Two decades of advertising, a support operation that answers, and a reputation solid enough that a first-time owner spending real money on paperwork can stop worrying about whether the vendor will exist in March. That reassurance is a genuine product. Plenty of people are happy to pay for it, and calling that irrational would be dishonest.

What follows is not an argument about their competence. It is an argument about proportion.

$249 a Year, Auto-Renewing, With No Discount Underneath

LegalZoom's registered agent service runs $249 annually. The charge repeats automatically, and a July 2026 pass through their published pricing turned up no introductory year, no promotional rate, and no lower tier hiding behind a bundle. Credit for the flatness: the amount quoted today is the amount that posts a year from today.

Now the division. Texas charges $15 to move a registered agent for an LLC. One year of LegalZoom's agent fee is nearly seventeen of those filings, back to back. If you switched agents every three weeks for a year, purely as a hobby, you would still spend less at the Secretary of State than you spent on a single annual invoice.

That comparison is not a trick, because the two things really are on the same shelf. Both are the cost of having a particular name sit in one field of one state record. Texas prices that transaction at fifteen dollars. LegalZoom prices holding the field at $249.

What the Texas Record Actually Displays

Pull up any Texas entity in the Secretary of State's file and you will find the agent's name and the registered office street address. That is the extent of it. There is no column for the agent's parent company, no column for national brand recognition, and no column recording the invoice. The record is indifferent, and so are the process servers who read it.

Which puts the $150 annual gap between $249 and $99 in a specific light. It does not buy a better position on the record. It buys a familiar name in a place where the name is not read by anyone deciding anything.

How to Change Your Texas Registered Agent From LegalZoom

The instrument is Form 401 at the Texas Secretary of State, authorized by Tex. Bus. Orgs. Code § 5.202, and the LLC fee is the $15 you have now read several times. File it online through SOSDirect or on paper. LegalZoom's cooperation is not required and their signature is not a field on the form.

The rule about timing is a rule about vacancy. The state means that field to hold a live name continuously, from registration through to dissolution, which makes the filing a substitution rather than a removal followed by a hire. Get the incoming agent lined up and consented first, send the form, then wait for the record to update before you touch the LegalZoom account. One practical note about auto-renewal. Because the $249 posts on its own schedule rather than asking permission, the useful month to file is the one before your renewal date, not the one after. The state does not care when you file. Your bank statement will.
